Dots & Boxes

Dots & Boxes | Chain Reaction!
This giant outdoor version of the Dots and Dashes is a fun and easy game to play.
Players take turns turning over line boards trying to create a blue square.
The first to complete a square, wins the box, taking the chip.
The player who has the most chips wins.
Be careful what move you make – you might be falling into a trap.
You and your friends will go dotty over this game!
A popular game for 2 players.
Players take turns turning over the joining laths either horizontally or vertically adjacent dots.
When a player completes the fourth side of a square (a box) they will take the chip from that box and must play again by turning another line.
When all boxes have been coloured blue, the game ends and the player who has the most chips wins.
Also known as Boxes, Squares, Paddocks, Pigs in a Pen, Square-it, Connect the Squares, Dots and Dashes, Dit Dot Dash, Dots, Line Game, Smart Dots, Dot to Dot, Dot Boxing, or, simply, the Dot Game.
Ideal to use as 5 minutes team building games, waiting in a queue or simply when you need to pass some time, the dots and boxes game is fast and easy to put together.
Aim to be the player who makes the last move. This is generally the winner because of the “long chain rule”, which means that at one point in the game there will be left a long chain in which the last player gets to make a whole row or column of boxes, shutting out further play.
Be careful where you place your line- you might just be falling into a ‘trap’!
How to play Dots and Boxes
- Choose which player is to go first. You could toss a coin, go by age or simply agree.
- Have the first player return a lath which reveals the colour blue, anywhere on the grid.
- Then the next player goes next and does the same.
- Continue like this until a player makes a 4th connecting line and a blue square its formed,
- The player who makes the box earns a point and take the token contained in this square.
- The box creating player then makes the next move.
- Continue until all the boxes are completed.
- The player with the most chips/tokens wins.
